 Thursday 7/2- Makia Groove 8pm

Makia lores

Makia (Muh-kee-uh), a Hawaiian Shaman term meaning “Energy Flows Where Attention Goes,” irrefutably characterizes the band’s live improvisational style, which is fueled by the infinite circle of energy that encompasses the band as well as the audience. Although they utilize the studio’s capabilities, a live show is the only way to truly experience Makia Groove. Formed in Kingsport, TN, Makia Groove was established on one solid foundation, in which each member of the band is encouraged to exercise complete artistic freedom. Self described as “World Funk Fusion”, the band combines Funk, Reggae, Jazz, and Afro-Cuban while still exploring the future. With their innovative spirit and drive, Makia Groove achieves a shapeless identity with unprecedented originality and diversity. The overall vibe of Makia Groove is generated by intense collaboration efforts, where each of the member’s contributions come together to make the sound and essence of Makia Groove unlimited in viewpoints and directions.

And as always, Charles will cooking up the best jerk chicken this side of Miami!

THUNDERDRUMS Tonight @ 8. Rolling Stone Pizza @ 6

 l_a8927b97901cd6640dc0a705022d5b0b THUNDERDRUMS Tonight @ 8. Rolling Stone Pizza @ 6

“…Thunderdrums’ world-beat electronica is as intriguing live as it is on tape with loops upon loops and percussive twists and turns…” – Creative Loafing – Charlotte NC – 5.13.09

World-beat percussion fused to electronica in a unique fashion would be the best description for the solo act known as Thunderdrums. Frank Bloom has simply taken his broad vocabulary of drumset and percussion and given an “old trick” a new twist: Looping unlike most audiences have ever seen. The melding of organic instrumentation with electronic nuances has brought Frank to the crossroads of tribal, trance, house, drum-n-bass compositions that have audiences all over on their feet and wanting more when the show is done. Frank’s onstage setup is most aptly described as “big” with an array of handdrums, percussion instruments, drumset, looping and effects pedals, samplers, drum machines and sometimes a keyboard.

Whether he is crossing the country as an artist (Thunderdrums), drum tech (Mickey Hart’s Global Drum Project) or as a sound engineer, Frank keeps the wheels spinning. Add to the mix, past performances with such recognizable musical artists and acts such as Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz (Widespread Panic), and Dr. Arvin Scott, Danielle Howle, Acoustic Syndicate, Barefoot Manner, Mike Orlando and Mason Bissett (Cast Iron Filter), Doug Jones (formerly of Cravin’ Melon), and The Carter Brothers. As a recurring member of the 2006 edition of the Everyone Orchestra, Frank shared stage space with such notables as Jimmy Herring (The Dead, Widespread Panic, ARU), Adrian Belew (King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Talking Heads), Darol Angor (Newgrass Revival), Jeff Sipe (ARU, Trey Anastasio Band, Phil Lesh and Friends), Jeff Coffin (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Dave Matthews Band, Mutet), and Vinnie Amico (MOE.).

Lobster Trap in the house today and The Lazybirds @ 6pm

Concert-on-the-Lawn Lobster Trap in the house today and The Lazybirds @ 6pm

Billing themselves as a country, blues and jazz quintet, the Lazybirds have distinguished themselves with High County audiences throughout the last decade by playing real down-home roots music that brings together the best sounds from the American musical traditions of the first half of the 20th century.

From the original country music of the Carter Family and Hank Williams to the blues of Mississippi John Hurt and Big Bill Broonzy and the jazz of electric guitar innovator Charlie Christian, the Lazybirds are well versed in the bedrock of Americana. The band has also added a number of fiddle tunes to their extensive repertoire, even veering into Russian folk songs on occasion. Story by David Brewer High Country Press

Tonight – Valorie Miller w/ Mike Holstein @ 6, Soul Night w/Cardeli after that!

Tonight we welcome, for the first time, Valorie Miller w/ Mike Holstein

Asheville N.C’s Valorie Miller has plenty of accolades in the world of songwriting: top finalist in the 2007 Great American Song Contest, a recent invitation to play at New York City’s renowned folk club, The Bitter End, and even fan mail from Lucinda Williams herself. But to Valorie, the hallmark of personal success is the intensity with which her fans become attached to her songs. One fan recently had his favorite of her songs played at his mother’s memorial service. Another sustained a life threatening injury while hiking in the wilderness alone, and later wrote her to say that playing her songs over and over in his head gave him the strength to get himself out alive.

Also, tonight is Soul Night with Cardeli at 8pm inside.
