Dumpstaphunk1 300x199 Labor Day Weekend @ The Pisgah Brewing Outdoor Stage!Formed in 2003, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk was initially put together by keyboardist Ivan Neville on a whim in order to perform a solo gig at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Ivan called in cousin Ian Neville (guitar), the double-bass bottom of both Nick Daniels and Tony Hall, and drummer Raymond Weber to round out the show. Named after a song Ivan had recently written, Dumpstaphunk’s informal performance became that of immediate legend. The project has since grown from chance side-project into what is now widely considered to be New Orleans’ most popular musical export. The band was recently voted 2007’s “New Orleans Best Funk Band” by both Offbeat Magazine and Gambit Weekly, and performs at some of the nation’s largest music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Voodoo Fest, 10,000 Lakes, and High Sierra.

Lee Boys 8pm $8

Fri. 6 – The Lee Boys 8pm $8

The Lee Boys video

The Lee Boys are one of America’s finest African-American sacred steel ensembles. This family group consists of three brothers, Alvin Lee (guitar), Derrick Lee and Keith Lee (vocals) along with their three nephews, Roosevelt Collier (pedal steel guitar), Alvin Cordy Jr. (7-string bass) and Earl Walker (drums). Each member began making music at the ages of 7 and 8 in the House of God church they attended in Perrine, FL. Here they underwent a rigorous course of training in a variety of musical instruments, including lap and pedal steel guitars. Born and raised in Miami, each of The Lee Boys grew up in the church where their father and grandfather, Rev. Robert E. Lee, was the pastor and a steel player himself.

“Sacred steel” is a type of music described as an inspired, unique form of Gospel music with a hard-driving, blues-based beat. The musical genre is rooted in Gospel, but infused with rhythm and blues, jazz, rock, funk, hip-hop, country and ideas from other nations. Influenced by the Hawaiian steel guitar fad of the 1930′s, brothers Willie and Troman Eason brought the electric lap steel guitar into the worship services of the House of God church in Jacksonville, FL. The Pentecostal congregation embraced the soulful sound, and over time this unique sound became the hallmark of the church. The pedal steel guitar was added to the mix and soon became the central instrument. The Lee Boys are part of the fourth generation of musicians in this faith.

Tennessee Hollow Tonight. Free!

Thu. 5 – Tennessee Hollow 8pm

l 91594ca0c6674e9fa854dbab1cf38229 Tennessee Hollow Tonight. Free!

Tennessee Hollow takes pride in its roots.  Raised on a mixture of early century acoustic blues and classic rock, the band is comprised of lead singer Dave Dribbon, slide guitarist Chris Budro, Trevor Stoia on bass, and drummer Micah Thomas.  Dave and Chris, the backbone of the band, met at Berklee College of Music in Boston and immediately began writing songs together.  What emerged was a blend of swampy rock and stripped down acoustic blues and folk which American Songwriter Magazine compared to Led Zeppelin’s broken down blues tunes.
